- Register as an employer
Once you have decided to employ staff, you must register with us as an employer. To do this you will need the IRD number of your business.
Most people find it easier to register as an employer online. You can also fill in an Employer Registration Form (IR334) and send it to us. If you are a company, you can also register as an employer as part of an application for an IRD number through the Companies Office Incorporation Process.

- Make sure your employee is allowed to work in New Zealand
It's important to check that a person is legally allowed to work in New Zealand before you employ them.
You can check whether they have a visa to work using "VisaView".
To check if a person is allowed to work here using Visa View login to your RealMe account on the Immigration New Zealand website.
- Have a signed employment agreement
When you employ someone, you need an employment agreement to protect the rights of both you and your employee.

- Understand ACC requirements
As an employer you're responsible for providing your employees with a safe workplace and ACC cover for work-related injuries.
