About the information you give us

When we collect personal information

We collect your personal information when you:

  • fill in an online form
  • update your details using an online service
  • subscribe to a service or newsletter, or
  • correspond with us.

We don't collect your personal information when you:

  • access and browse our website, or
  • use any of our online calculators and worksheets.

Your obligation to give us personal information

It is part of your tax obligation to fill in various forms for us. We ask you for information so we can assess your financial entitlements and obligations under the Acts we are in charge of.

By law you must give us this information. Penalties may apply if you don't.

Your rights to the information we hold about you

You may ask to see the personal information we hold about you.

Call us on 0800 227 773 to request a copy of your personal information. You can call us:

  • Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm, and
  • Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

We may require proof of your identity before we provide you with a copy of this information.

You can also use the online service My family details and income to view the information we hold about your family details and income.

Note

You need to register for a user ID and password to use this service. Only principal child carers can access this service.

What happens next

  1. Unless we have a lawful reason for withholding the information we will show it to you.
  2. If you think that some of the information we hold about you is incorrect you can ask us to change it.
  3. We will assess your request and either change the relevant information, or explain why we think the information should not be changed.
  4. We will make a note of your change request on your records.

Our rights to the information we hold about you

  • We use this information for Working for Families Tax Credits, child support, student loans and tax purposes. 
  • We combine this information with employment and income information from employers and payers (for example, Work and Income) to calculate how much Working for Families Tax Credits to pay you.
  • We may disclose your personal income information to your spouse or partner, and may disclose your spouse's or partner's income information to you. By completing the Working for Families Tax Credits registration, you and your spouse or partner accept that we may disclose this information. We need your agreement to pay you Working for Families Tax Credits.
  • We may exchange information about you with:
    • the Ministry of Social Development
    • the Ministry of Justice
    • the Department of Labour
    • the Ministry of Education
    • the Accident Compensation Corporation, or
    • their contracted agencies.
  • We may give information about you to countries with which New Zealand has an information supply agreement.
  • We also have an agreement to supply information to Statistics New Zealand for statistical purposes only.
Note

The Ministry of Social Development may transfer beneficiary information to us on a weekly basis. Details of the kinds of information that may be disclosed can be found in the New Zealand Gazette, 24 March 2005, No. 56,  page 1437.
