Working for families tax credits
Formerly family assistance

If we paid you the wrong amount of money

When we calculate your entitlement

Our payments to you are based on the information you gave us about your family and income circumstances and your:

  • estimated family income for the year if you receive weekly or fortnightly payments, or
  • actual income for the year if you receive an annual payment paid as a lump sum.

Our calculation of your Working for Families Tax Credits entitlement depends on:

  • your accurate estimation of your income, and
  • your help in keeping us up to date and telling us about any change in your circumstances immediately.

This way, we can make sure that we pay you the correct amount of money.

If we paid you too much money

If we paid you too much money, please call us on 0800 227 773 so that we can arrange for you to pay back the money in instalments, or discuss other options. You can call us:

  • Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm, and
  • Saturday from 9am to 1pm.
Important

If you make an arrangement with us, penalties will be significantly reduced.

If you do not contact us, we will send you a bill after the end of the tax year (31 March) asking you to pay the money back.

If we paid you too little money

If we paid you too little money, you will receive:

  • extra payments after the end of the tax year (31 March) if your income was less than you estimated, or
  • back payments after the end of the tax year (31 March) if you missed out on payments while applying for Working for Families Tax Credits.
