Work out if you need to file an IR3 individual income return

At the end of each tax year (31 March) some taxpayers file an Individual income return (IR3) if they earned certain types of income, or income that hasn't had tax deducted, for example self-employed income, rental income. See "Find out more" below to learn about IR3 returns.

Use our online tool to find out if you need to file a return

From April each year, you can check if you need to file an IR3 return for the tax year just ended by using our Do you need to file an IR3 or receive a personal tax summary? tool under "Work it out".
