Auckland IT specialist jailed

An Auckland IT specialist has been sentenced to 3 years in prison on tax fraud charges.

Andreth Franghetti was jailed as a result of his offending relating to millions of dollars in Covid support payments, GST, and income tax refunds.

In total, Franghetti claimed $7,130,769 of which $300,039 was paid out.

Inland Revenue stopped the rest of the payments in October 2020 after suspicious transactions in his bank accounts prompted a review of all his applications and refunds.

It is disappointing to see fraud occurring in this way, and particularly in relation to products designed to support customers’ during a global pandemic.

Franghetti was sentenced in the Papakura District Court on 19 December 2022.
