Individual income tax
Te take whiwhinga mo te takitahi

Tidy up your taxes

If you have untaxed income

You need to file an Individual income tax return (IR3) by 7 July if you:

  • are self-employed
  • have a rental property, or
  • earned extra cash during the year.
Note

We'll send you an IR3 tax pack by the end of May if you've filed an IR3 return in the last two years.

If your IR3 tax pack hasn't arrived, or this is the first time you've had to file an IR3 return, you can request one online - go to "Get it done online".

Your entitlement to working for families

If you receive your working for families tax credits payments during the year, after you send us your IR3 return we use the income details you provide to adjust your annual entitlement.

If you receive your working for families tax credits as a lump sum, we'll work out your entitlement after we've received your IR3 return.

If you don't file your IR3 return on time, penalties and interest may apply.

If you're registered for working for families tax credits

If you're not required to file an IR3 return we'll send you a personal tax summary (PTS) at the end of July.

Your PTS shows your:

  • income and tax deductions for the year, and
  • working for families entitlements.

Your PTS tells you if you've:

  • overpaid your tax and are due a refund, or
  • underpaid your tax and have tax to pay.
What to do between April and July

You don't need to do anything else until your PTS arrives at the end of July.

If you don't receive your PTS by the end of July, you can request one online. In most cases you will receive your PTS within 10 working days of requesting it. However please allow a maximum of 30 working days for it to arrive.

Your PTS will also be available to view through your online services account as soon as it is processed. If you are not already signed up to our online services, you can register now - go to "Secure online services".
