This transparency statement explains how we use and engage on our official social media channels. It is published in line with Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission guidance on the official use of social media by public servants.
How we use social media
We use our official social media channels to:
- share general information about our products, services, system and process updates, and about changes that may affect customers (for example, due dates or system availability)
- promote public information campaigns, tools and guidance published on our websites
- run advertising posts that raise awareness and educate customers about entitlements, compliance requirements, key dates and tax obligations
- share information about working at Inland Revenue, including careers and recruitment
- point people to the correct Inland Revenue channels for help or further information.
We do not use social media to:
- discuss individual tax or personal matters
- provide account specific advice or decisions
- replace secure services such as myIR, phone or written correspondence.
How we engage
We welcome respectful feedback and general questions on our social media pages. We may respond where appropriate, but we cannot guarantee a response to every comment or message.
Our social media accounts are generally monitored between 9am and 4pm on standard business days. They are not monitored 24/7 and are not suitable for urgent matters.
If you need help with a personal or urgent issue, please contact us directly in your myIR account or our official contact channels.
Comments, moderation and community expectations
We encourage constructive and respectful discussion. To maintain a safe and informative environment, we may hide, remove or report content that:
- includes personal or confidential information
- is offensive, abusive, defamatory or discriminatory
- is misleading, false or irrelevant
- promotes commercial products or services
- breaches the terms of use of the relevant social media platform.
Sharing or reposting content
We may share or repost content from other organisations or individuals where it is relevant to our work, or of public interest. This does not mean we endorse that content or guarantee its accuracy. Following or liking other accounts does not imply endorsement.
