All data can be found in an Excel download located on the student loan dataset page. Data is updated two months post the end of each quarter.

Number of student loan borrowers

This graph shows the number of student loan borrowers by New Zealand-based, and overseas-based, as at the end of each quarter from March 2014 to March 2025.

As at 31 March 2025 the:

• Total number of New Zealand-based student loan borrowers decreased by 0.4% from 514,619 in March 2024 to 512,381 in March 2025.
• Total number of overseas-based student loan borrowers increased by 2.7% from 111,302 in March 2024 to 114,347 in March 2025.
• Total number of all student loan borrowers increased by 0.1% from 625,921 in March 2024 to 626,728 in March 2025.

Notes:

• A borrower is any person who has drawn from the Student Loan Scheme and not yet repaid in full.
