All data can be found in an Excel download located on the student loan dataset page. Data is updated two months post the end of each quarter.

Number of student loan borrowers

This graph shows the number of student loan borrowers by New Zealand-based, and overseas-based, as at the end of each quarter.

This graph has multiple vertical bars tracking the number of New Zealand-based and overseas-based borrowers. The vertical axis shows the number of borrowers. The horizontal axis shows quarterly data from December 2012 to 31 December 2023.

As at December 2023 the:

• Total number of New Zealand-based student loan borrowers decreased by 5.0% from 532,125 in December 2022 to 505,390 in December 2023.
• Total number of overseas-based student loan borrowers increased by 5.1% from 104,147 in December 2022 to 109,484 in December 2023.
• Total number of all student loan borrowers decreased by 3.4% from 636,272 in December 2022 to 614,874 in December 2023.

Notes:

A borrower is any person who has drawn from the Student Loan Scheme and not yet repaid in full.
