All data can be found in an Excel download located on the student loan dataset page. Data is updated two months post the end of each quarter.

Number of student loan borrowers

This graph shows the number of student loan borrowers by New Zealand-based, and overseas-based, as at the end of each quarter from June 2015 to June 2026.

As at 30 June 2026 the:

• Total number of New Zealand-based student loan borrowers increased by 0.6% from 509,732 in June 2025 to 512,938 in June 2026.
• Total number of overseas-based student loan borrowers increased by 0.2% from 113,160 in June 2025 to 113,398 in June 2026.
• Total number of all student loan borrowers increased by 0.6% from 622,892 in June 2025 to 626,336 in June 2026.

Note:

• A borrower is any person who has drawn from the Student Loan Scheme and not yet repaid in full.
