Overdue repayments

If a borrower does not meet some or all of their repayment obligations by the due date, the amount due but not paid becomes an overdue repayment. Late payment interest is charged on the overdue amount.

Number of student loan borrowers with overdue repayments

This graph shows the number of New Zealand-based and overseas-based student loan borrowers with overdue repayments as at the end of each quarter from March 2015 to March 2026.

As at 31 March 2026 the: 

  • Total number of New Zealand-based borrowers with overdue repayments decreased by 9.3% from 30,375 in March 2025 to 27,538 in March 2026. 
  • Total number of overseas-based student loan borrowers with overdue repayments decreased by 1.9% from 85,911 in March 2025 to 84,272 in March 2026. 
  • Total number of all student loan borrowers with overdue repayments decreased by 3.8% from 116,286 in March 2025 to 111,810 in March 2026. 

Note:

  • A borrower is any person who has drawn from the Student Loan Scheme and not yet repaid in full.

Amount of overdue student loan repayments

As at 31 March 2026 the: 

  • Overdue repayments for New Zealand-based borrowers increased by 0.6% from $184 million in March 2025 to $185 million in March 2026. 
  • Overdue repayments for overseas-based borrowers increased by 6.3% from $2,331 million in March 2025 to $2,478 million in March 2026. 
  • Overdue repayments for all borrowers increased by 5.9% from $2,515 million in March 2025 to $2,663 million in March 2026. 

Notes:

  • If payments are not made on time, late payment interest may be charged. This is only charged on the overdue amount, and only if the overdue amount is $334 or more. It will keep being charged until borrowers have caught up with payments.
  • For overseas-based borrowers, interest is calculated daily and added to the loan balance at the end of the year.
  • A borrower is any person who has drawn from the Student Loan Scheme and not yet repaid in full.
