  Register for an overseas pensions transfer account

From 1 April 2026 qualifying recognised overseas pension schemes (QROPS) must offer the 'scheme pays' option for foreign superannuation transfers. They will need to register for an overseas pension transfers (OPT) tax account to file monthly returns.

KiwiSaver scheme providers may also choose to offer the 'scheme pays' option for foreign superannuation transfers. They will need to register for an OPT tax account as well.

After logging into myIR, select the 'I want to ...'  tab

Select 'Register for overseas pension transfers'

Log in to myIR

What happens next

We will process your request within 10 working days.

If we need more information we will contact you.

Your overseas pensions transfer account will show in myIR once we have confirmed your registration.

You will receive a letter confirming the registration.
