Living and currently in New Zealand

Use this process if you already live and are currently in New Zealand.

  • Check what you’ll need for this process.
  • Scanned electronic copies of a primary and a secondary identification document from the lists provided
  • Certified translations of any documents not in English
  • The extra identity documentation needed if you’re applying for a child 
  • Original, physical documents to be verified in person for both online and paper applications

New arrival to New Zealand

Use this process if you have arrived in New Zealand recently (within 4-6 weeks or the last date your visa says you can be in New Zealand). 

You apply online through Immigration New Zealand, and we check your identity with them. You do not need to give us proof of your identity again. 

If you are applying for a child, check the visa requirements.

Living overseas

Use this process before you arrive in New Zealand. 

Check what you’ll need for this process.

  • Proof of identity and documents from the lists provided 
  • Certified translations of any documents not in English
  • The extra identity documentation needed if you’re applying for a child 
  • Scanned copies of your documents

Child IRD number

You can get an IRD number for your child at the same time as you register their birth and apply for Best Start, or you can apply later through us.

Applying at birth using SmartStart

You can apply for an IRD number when you register your child’s birth to receive Best Start payments. You can apply on the SmartStart website.

If you did this when your child was born, your child will already have an IRD number.

Applying through us

To apply for a child, use the process from above that suits you and your child’s situation.

You need to give us:

  • proof of your child’s identity
  • proof of identity for yourself
  • certified translations of any documents not in English.
