From 12 September 2026, we’re introducing changes to help improve the quality of employment information (EI) data and support a smoother move to stronger validation rules in future.
New warnings when filing in myIR
When you submit your employee details (ED) files in myIR, warnings will show if your information does not match our records. For example:
- invalid or missing IRD numbers
- tax codes that do not align with the IRD number (for example, using a company IRD number with an individual tax code)
- student loan deductions that do not match a customer’s account status
- missing employee names.
You’ll need to acknowledge these warnings before submitting your ED, but you can file your return without correcting them.
There are no changes to filing in gateway services.
New ‘Check your employment information’ service
A new validation service will be available in:
- myIR file upload
- gateway services (using the existing Returns API).
This service lets you check EI files before you file them, so you can identify errors or warnings early.
Updated validation reports in myIR
Initial validation error reports in myIR will now show:
- errors
- warnings
- both.
This gives you better visibility of possible issues after filing.
