Find out when you can cancel your fringe benefit tax (FBT) registration and how to file your final return.
When you cannot cancel
You cannot cancel your FBT registration while you are providing fringe benefits.
With low-interest loans, you cannot cancel your FBT registration until the loan is repaid. You must continue to file FBT returns.
With fringe benefits provided to former employees, you cannot cancel your FBT registration, and you must continue to file returns and pay the FBT.
When you can cancel
You can cancel your FBT registration if you have stopped providing all fringe benefits, even if you are still employing staff.
If you are still employing staff
If you have stopped providing all fringe benefits but are still employing staff, how you cancel your registration depends on how you file returns.
If you file quarterly, you must continue filing returns until the end of the tax year. Show the taxable fringe benefits as 0.00 for any quarter you did not provide fringe benefits to employees.
If you file income year or annual FBT returns, you can cancel your registration when you stop providing fringe benefits. However, if you’re using the alternate rate calculation, you’ll need the income information required for the year before you can file your final return and cancel your registration.
If you have stopped employing staff
If you have permanently stopped employing staff and providing all fringe benefits, you can cancel both your employer and FBT registrations in myIR.
Final FBT return and payment due dates
You must file your final FBT return before cancelling your registration. If you are filing your final return in myIR, select the final return option.
For quarter 4, income year or annual returns, there is no change to the due date for filing your final FBT return.
If you file quarterly returns and have stopped employing and providing fringe benefits in quarters 1 to 3, your due date for filing the final return and making your payment is extended as follows.
| Quarter | Return period | Final return and payment due date | Original due date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 April to 30 June | 31 August | 20 July |
| 2 | 1 July to 30 September | 30 November | 20 October |
| 3 | 1 October to 31 December | 28 February | 20 January |
