If you're a parent or legal guardian living with and caring for a child under 18, you can register a myIR account for them. If the child is over 18, you cannot register on their behalf.

Before you start

To register, you'll need the child's first and last name, date of birth and IRD number to verify their identity. You will also need to provide a contact phone number and email address.

On the Inland Revenue homepage click on 'Register for myIR'

Fill in the personal details of the child and create a user ID

Enter the child's details:

  • first and last name
  • user ID
  • email address
  • phone number.

If your user ID is not available, you'll need to choose another one.

Choose how you want us to contact you

By choosing to register for myIR, you're agreeing to receive electronic communications from us. This means we'll stop sending you paper statements, notices, and some types of correspondence.

Instead, we'll let you know when you have letters or secure messages in myIR. You can choose to be notified by:

  • email, or
  • mobile.

Choose the purpose of your registration

By choosing the purpose of your registration your account will be personalised with the next steps.

If your child already has an IRD number select ‘Do you already have an IRD number?’

If your child does not have an IRD number select ‘Apply for a new IRD number for an individual’.

If you select the wrong option, you can find all the options under the ‘I want to…’ tab.

Create your password and set up two-step verification

Along with your password you’ll need to use at least 1 method of two-step verification. When you are first prompted to set up two-step verification, follow the onscreen steps in myIR.

How to set up two-step verification for myIR

Add the child's IRD number to their account

Enter your child’s IRD number and date of birth.

To activate access, choose 1 of these options:

  • receive an activation code by text message
  • call us.

You need to do this because your child already has a myIR web logon, but their IRD number is not linked to it. Linking and activating their IRD number gives you access to all myIR services for your child.

If you choose text message enter your mobile number. If it matches the mobile number we have on record, we'll send you an activation code by text.

If the mobile number does not match, we'll let you know if we do not have a mobile number on record for you, or the mobile number you entered does not match our records.

If this happens, you'll need to call us to activate access.

What happens when the child turns 18

When the child turns 18, they will need to take over and manage their own account. If the child would like you to continue to act on their behalf, they can set you up as a nominated person.
