Most people who earn salary or wages pay the correct amount of tax and don't need to do anything at the end of the tax year. However, if you earn income that has no tax deducted, or if you paid too much or not enough tax during the year, you'll need to file a return or get a personal tax summary.
This calculator will let you know if you need to do anything.
You can also work out whether you're required to file an IR3 tax return or request a personal tax summary by using our Work out my income tax filing options calculator. If you’re not required to file an IR3 return, we will use your salary/wage details we already hold and any additional information you provide to let you know whether you’d have a refund or tax to pay.
For tax years 2014 onwards the Do you need to file an IR3 return and Receive a personal tax summary calculators will be discontinued. The only way to work out if you're required to file a return for tax years 2014 onwards will be through myIR Secure Online Services.
