New gateway services for filing tax returns

Inland Revenue has introduced new and improved gateway services that allow software providers to integrate with our system for certain functions.

These new services are replacing E-File – an older, heritage system - which will be decommissioned on Friday (April 16).

Inland Revenue’s head of transformation, Greg James, says the new services have been developed by Inland Revenue with input from software providers.

“While Inland Revenue has developed these new services, it is the software providers that have the discretion to choose which ones they are building for their customers. For any functionality they don’t build, tax agents can use myIR,” Greg James says.

“So, if tax agents have any questions around the timing, functionality and use of the new services, they should talk to their software provider.

“IR will keep E-File available up until 4pm 16 April for submitting 2020 and prior tax year returns. However, software providers could move to the new gateway services before then.

“On Friday, IR will also remove the E-File contact channels including the dedicated email and phone lines. E-File is already closed to new registrations.

“We have been working closely with the software providers to ensure a smooth transition from E-File to gateway services and to ensure tax agents have the information they need to be ready. Software providers are dealing directly with their tax agent clients, especially about the functionality they will adopt and how to use it,” Greg James says.

After 4pm on 16 April tax agents:
• will not be able to file through E-File
• will be able to use myIR.
• will be able to amend returns they’ve filed in E-File using gateway services or in myIR.

Return Acknowledgements (RAs) and Notices of Assessments (NOAs) will not be generated by E-File for any returns that haven’t been processed by 16 April. They will be available through the Document Service in gateway services, and in myIR.
