Tauranga couple sentenced in tax case

A Tauranga couple have been sentenced for failing to provide income tax returns over multiple years.

Immigration lawyer Joseph “Mike” Chand and his wife Aneeta Chand, who works in the health sector, were sentenced on 16 August when they appeared in the Tauranga District court.

Over 16 years, Mr Chand sought multiple extensions of time to file, engaged in protracted and extensive communications with IR in a continuing attempt to manipulate and delay, and gave repeated excuses for not filing returns.

Mr Chand made payments throughout the offending periods, and all returns were filed and tax paid before sentencing.

Mr Chand was sentenced to 7 months home detention and Mrs Chand to a total fine of $19,200.
