Decade long failure to file GST returns

A Hastings man has been convicted and fined for failing to file GST and income tax returns for more than a decade.

Mark William Devon was sentenced in the Hastings District Court on February 16 on three representative charges of knowingly failing to furnish GST and income tax returns from 2010 to 2020.

Devon was responsible for the tax affairs of a partnership with Margaret Devon who together operate an agricultural and holiday accommodation business.

No GST returns were filed between 2010 and 2020 and no income tax returns were filed for himself or the business were filed between 2015 and 2020.

The sentencing judge noted the offending was sustained and deliberate over a decade but that all outstanding returns have now been filed.

Devon was convicted and fined $10,530.
