Planned system outage - 12 September 2026 | Our online services including myIR, self service phone lines and gateway services will be unavailable on Saturday 12 September, 2026 from 1pm to approximately 10.30pm while we complete a planned system update. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

When you start your new job you'll need to:

  • have an IRD number
  • know your tax code.

Use the right tax code

Your tax code is what decides how much tax is deducted from your income. The tax code that you use depends on how many sources of income you have, and whether you have a student loan.

It's important that you use the right tax code or you'll pay too little or too much tax. This could mean you end up with a tax bill at the end of the year.

As an employee you'll complete a Tax code declaration - IR330 for your employer. This tells them what deductions to make from your pay, including any student loan.
