We play an important role in improving the economic and social wellbeing of New Zealanders. We collect 80% of the Crown's revenue as well as collecting and disbursing social support programme payments and providing the government with policy advice.

We provide assurance that the systems for tax and social policy payments are effective and efficient. We work to deliver on the policy intent, making sure that it is:

  • operating as intended
  • achieving intended outcomes
  • fit for purpose.

Working with other parties

We work with other agencies to help deliver inter-generational wellbeing and positive outcomes for all New Zealanders.

We work with many other parties to help manage and run the revenue system, such as tax agents, KiwiSaver providers and financial institutions.

Advising the government

We advise the government on:

  • the tax and social policies that we administer
  • international tax issues
  • developing and implementing New Zealand's international tax legislation.

Social policy

We administer several social policy programmes, such as student loans and child support obligations.

We also administer KiwiSaver and make payments for:

  • Working for Families
  • Paid parental leave
  • Best Start.

Sustainability

We want to ensure we play our part to protect New Zealand for our future generations. We're committed to operating sustainably and reducing our environmental footprint. We have set a target to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2025 and 50% by 2030.

We're proud to work at Inland Revenue, knowing we help to make Aotearoa New Zealand a great place to live and work, now and in the future.
