In the 2023 tax year there were 655,588 taxpayers registered for GST and filing returns. This number is a 0.5% decrease from the 2022 tax year.

The graph above has 5 lines showing the number of GST filers by turnover band from the year ended March 2001 to the year ended March 2023. The lines show the number of GST filers with no turnover, turnover between $1 and $60,000, turnover between $60,001 and $250,000, turnover between $250,001 and $1 million and turnover $1 million plus. The vertical axis shows the number of GST filers. The horizontal axis shows the March years between 2001 and 2023. The number of GST filers is increasing year on year for when turnover is over $60,001. For GST filers with turnover less than $60,000 the number of filers increases until 2009 and since 2009 has generally been decreasing year on year. 

The graph above shows the number of GST filers by turnover band from the year ended March 2001 to the year ended March 2023. The number of GST filers with higher than $60,000 turnover is increasing year on year. This increase was slower in 2023 than it was in 2022. The number of GST taxpayers reporting turnover greater than $1 million grew by 4.3% in the 2023 tax year, compared to 12.7% in the previous year. The number of taxpayers with turnover between $250,001 and $1 million grew by 1.9% in the 2023 tax year compared to 5.6% in the previous year.

The number of customers reporting turnover between $1 and $60,000 fell by 2.2% in the year to March 2023 compared to a fall of 5.9% in the previous year, with taxpayers with no turnover falling by 6.1% and taxpayers with turnover between $1 and $60,000 falling by 2.2%.
