When a non-parent carer applies for child support through us, they need to name both parents on the form. However, they can choose not to receive payments from 1 parent.

This is also known as waiving payments.

Who can stop payments

You can stop receiving child support from 1 parent if you meet all these requirements.

  • You receive child support through us for a child you’re not the parent of.
  • You do not get an Unsupported Child’s Benefit for that child.
  • You named both parents when you applied for child support, but do not want to receive payments from 1 of them.

How to stop payments

You can choose not to receive payments from 1 parent:

  • in the application form when you first apply for child support
  • by filling out a payment waiver form after child support has already begun.

If you want to stop payments from both parents, you need to cancel child support.

How to stop receiving payment from 1 parent

If you change your mind

You can restart payments at any time by filling out a ‘Cancel a payment waiver’ form.

Restart payments you’ve stopped receiving

Example: Marie chooses not to receive from Simon

Marie is caring for her grandson Benny, who lives with her full-time. She does not receive an Unsupported Child’s Benefit for him, but would like child support from Benny’s mother Sam. She does not want child support from Benny’s father, Simon, as he helps support Benny in other ways.

She applies for child support through us, naming both parents, but chooses not to receive payments from Simon.

While Simon’s name is on Marie’s notice of assessment, only Sam needs to pay child support.
