List of events where we offer extra help

During some adverse or emergency events we may offer extra support to families and businesses, and to farmers and growers through the income equalisation scheme. This includes large or ongoing events, such as Cyclone Gabrielle.

For each event, we will tell you the support available during and after the event, and information you may need to complete your tax afterwards.

2026 July – Severe weather event affecting the Kaikoura, Waitaki, South Wairarapa and Wairoa districts, and the Marlborough region From 6 to 9 July 2026 local states of emergency were declared for the Kaikoura, Waitaki and Wairoa districts. The Marlborough region and the South Wairarapa district were also seriously affected by a storm system that passed over the country resulting in damage from heavy rainfall and high winds.
2026 April - Severe weather in the Wellington region Between 18 and 22 April 2026 local authorities declared this severe weather a regional state of emergency event.
2026 February Severe weather in Canterbury On 26 February 2026 the Government classified this severe weather as a medium scale adverse event. We may be able to help if you are in the Canterbury region and your business or personal income is affected.
2026 February - Severe weather Waipā, Ōtorohanga, Rangitīkei, Manawatū, Banks Peninsula Between 14 and 17 February 2026 local authorities declared this severe weather a local emergency event
2026 January - Severe weather in Northland, Tairāwhiti, Thames-Coromandel, Western Bay of Plenty and Hauraki On 20 and 21 January 2026 local authorities declared this severe weather a local emergency event.
Ongoing - Income spreading for Mycoplasma bovis (Mbovis) If you have culled your herd because of Mbovis but received a compensation payment, you may be able to lessen the impact of a high tax bill.
2025 October - Severe weather Canterbury, Clutha and Southland On 22 and 24 October 2025 the Government classified this severe weather as a local emergency event.
2025 June - Flooding in Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough On 30 June 2025, the Government classified this flooding as a medium-scale adverse event.
2025 March - Drought conditions across New Zealand
On 7 March 2025, the Government classified this weather, which included hot, dry conditions with below average rainfall, as a medium-scale adverse event.
2025 March - Drought conditions in Taranaki region
On 27 February 2025, the Government classified this weather, which included hot, dry conditions with below average rainfall, as a medium-scale adverse event.
2023 January to February - weather including Cyclone Gabrielle
If you were affected by the severe weather events of January to February 2023, including Cyclones Hale and Gabrielle, you may be able to get extra support.
