Natural disasters and adverse or emergency events like flooding, droughts or disease outbreaks can affect how you manage your tax. It may mean you cannot pay on time, or need to update your details, such as income estimates, with us.
There are ways that we can help you during this time. For some events, we may offer extra support to families and businesses, in addition to what we usually offer. Check the list of emergency events below.

During some adverse or emergency events we may offer extra support to families and businesses, and to farmers and growers through the income equalisation scheme. This includes large events such as Cyclone Gabrielle or COVID.

Unable to file or pay your tax on time
We can help if you are unable to file or pay your tax on time during a natural disaster, adverse or emergency event. We may be able to write off some tax, penalties or interest, and we can help you set up an instalment plan.

Help for you or your family
We may be able to help with your personal tax, KiwiSaver or student loan payments if you've been affected by a natural disaster, adverse or emergency event. For families' payments, you’ll need to let us know if your income or situation has changed.

If you have a farm, a business, or are self-employed, we can provide some tax relief and help you manage your business tax following an adverse or emergency event.
