If you disagree with your Fees Free outcome you can ask us to review it.

Reasons for a review

You might disagree with the Fees Free entitlement amount, or the fees it was based on.

You might disagree with a decision about your eligibility, or the eligibility of your qualification or programme. For example:

  • whether your qualification or programme was eligible
  • whether you met the residency requirements on the day you completed your qualification or programme
  • whether previous study ruled you out of a Fees Free entitlement
  • whether you have already had Fees Free
  • whether you used Training incentive allowance and this affected your entitlement.

How to request a review

To request a review, send us a message in myIR.

Fees Free - contact us

What happens next

Once we have received your request, we will decide if we need to contact the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) to help with the review.

We may ask you for more information or evidence to support your request.

Your review should be completed within 20 working days, but if we need to refer it to TEC this may take longer. We will contact you if this is needed.

If your review is successful, we will amend your Fees Free entitlement. If you have a student loan the amount that was transferred to your balance will be adjusted. If you don’t have a student loan, any further entitlement will be refunded to your bank account. We will send a letter to your myIR account with details.

What reviews do not cover

If you want to complain about your Tertiary education organisation, or the delivery of study or work-based learning you received, you will need to contact the Tertiary Education Commission.
