Tax on grants and relief payments for individuals
You may be able to get a civil defence payment from Work and Income (Te Hiranga Tangata). These payments help cover the costs of:
- food
- bedding
- clothing
- accommodation
- loss of income.
Civil Defence payment - Work and Income
You will not be taxed on payments you get for food, bedding, clothing and accommodation, as these are private household expenses.
You will also not be taxed if you get a payment for loss of income, if your income is usually from either employment or a benefit.
If you are self-employed you may need to pay tax on the payment, depending on where the grant came from and the purpose of the grant. Read the page below for more information about tax on grants for businesses affected by an emergency event.
