How to file a GST return in the My business section of myIR

In this video, you'll find out how to file a GST return through myIR Secure Online Services. We're continuing to make improvements based on customer feedback so please note some things may change.

To get started, log in to myIR and select the 'My business' tab - this replaces the My GST' tab.

Under 'Accounts' you'll find your GST account.


Visual:

You can start the filing process by selecting 'File return' under 'Periods' or under 'I want to...'. Before you file your GST, you'll need your total sales and income and your total spending including purchases and expenses.

Choose a GST filing period and click 'File now'. This will start the GST return process.

The navigation bar along the top will help you see where you are in the process of filing your GST. Not every step needs to be completed. For example, if you don't need to file provisional tax then this step won't appear.

At step 1, you can choose the filing option that suits you. Here we'll show you the steps you need to take it you choose 'I know my total sales and purchases'.

Transition to 'Sales and Income' sub page. user enters data into the first field.

In step 2, put in your sales and income information.

The question mark icons provide extra information if you need help.

Pop up circle highlights 'yes/no' tab under Debit Adjustment column. Then pointer selects 'yes' then 'no' button. Pop up circle highlights 'next'. then pointer selects 'Next' button.

If you have debit adjustments, select 'Yes'.

Transition to 'Purchases and Expenses' sub page. Pop up circle highlights 'first field' for data, user enters data into the first field. Pop up circle highlights 'yes/no' button under credit adjustments title. Pop up circle highlights 'next'. Then pointer selects 'Next' button.

Audio:

In step 3, put your total purchases and expenses. And any credit adjustment details.


Visual:

Transition to 'Provisional Tax Payment' sub page. User enters data into first field under 'Payment calculation'. Pop up circle highlights 'Payment calculation'. Then pointer selects 'Next' button.

Step 4, if you pay provisional tax you'll need to put in the instalment amount due.

Transition to 'Review' sub page. Pop up circle highlights 'Declaration Tick box'. Pointer selects Declaration Tick box. Then pointer selects 'Next' button.

In step 5, review the information you've provided before submitting it. If the information is incorrect tick the declaration box. Click 'Next'.

Transition to 'Return Payment Method' sub page. Pop up circle highlights 'Forecast Penalty and Interest Fields'. Transition to 'Edit return Payment Method' sub page. Pop up circle highlights 'yes/no' button under 'your balance due is'. Then pointer selects 'Next' button.

Audio:

If the return is a debit and it is late, you will be shown the forecasted penalties and interest. If your GST is on time and there is an amount to pay you can make a direct debit payment or pay from your Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card while you're completing your return. Simply follow the prompts.

Pop up circle highlights ‘yes/no’ tick box under ‘update refund bank account’. Then pointer selects ‘yes’ button. Transition to ‘Bank Account Details’ sub page. Pop up circle highlights ‘bank number field’.

Audio:

If the return is a GST credit, you will be asked if you want to transfer the credit. If there is no GST bank account saved, you will be asked to add a bank account.

Transition to ‘Attachments’ sub page. Pop up circle highlights ‘Add correspondence’ and ‘Add receipts’ . Then pointer selects ‘Submit’ button.

You can also add any attachment (i.e. credit assessments) here.

Transition to ‘confirmation’ sub page. Pop up circle highlights ‘OK’ . Then pointer selects ‘OK’ button.

A confirmation will appear. Select ‘Ok’ to return to the My business homepage.
